Switch from Gmail to Proton Mail
Proton Mail's Easy Switch copies your emails, contacts and calendars from Gmail and forwards new mail. Then you update your accounts, keep a copy of your Google data and remove Gmail.
Good to know
- With a free Proton account you can connect one Gmail account, paid plans allow up to three.
- Easy Switch imports recent emails up to about 80 % of your free storage.
- Menu names are given as the official help pages name them. They can differ slightly depending on app version and language.
Steps
Create a Proton account
Sign up for Proton Mail and log in at mail.proton.me.
Connect Gmail with Easy Switch
Go to Settings > All settings > Import via Easy Switch and choose Google. Sign in to your Google account and allow all requested permissions. Pick what to import (emails, contacts, calendars) and, if you like, adjust labels and the time range. Then start the import.

Receive new Gmail messages in Proton
Easy Switch then forwards new emails from your Gmail inbox to Proton Mail, and you can send from your Gmail address inside Proton Mail. Only the Gmail inbox is forwarded: messages that a Gmail filter moves past the inbox do not arrive.

Update your accounts
Change the email address in your online accounts. Start with the important ones: banking, healthcare, government services and anything linked to a payment method. Tell your contacts your new address.
Download your Google data
Use Google Takeout to download a copy of your Gmail and other Google data. Downloading does not delete anything at Google.

Disconnect Gmail and remove it
In Proton Mail, open Settings > All settings > Import via Easy Switch and delete the forwarding in the history section. Then, in your Google account under Data & privacy, remove Gmail from the services you no longer use. You need an alternate email address for this. Gmail deletes your emails and settings after 30 days and the address can no longer be used. Your Google account and other Google services remain. Deleting the whole Google account is a separate step.
